Malaysia and Johor have the potential to attract new investments following recent uncertainty in Indonesia’s stock market, after Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) proposed a potential downgrade of the country’s market classification.![]()
Johor State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee Chairman, Yang Berhormat Lee Ting Han said this opportunity was supported by Malaysia’s position as a neutral international market.![]()
He noted that the Malaysian stock market remained competitive despite the possibility of a downgrade involving its neighbouring country.![]()
“Generally, an MSCI downgrade of Indonesia is not expected to have a significant negative impact on the markets in Johor or Malaysia, as MSCI focuses on capital markets and the components of international indices.![]()
“When foreign funds are withdrawn from a market following a downgrade, they typically seek alternative, stable markets. Malaysia, particularly Johor, holds a neutral and balanced position between East and West.![]()
“This makes it a potential destination for strategic investments, as well as long-term physical development and infrastructure projects,” he told reporters at the Falcon Data Centre Project Completion Appreciation Ceremony held at Forest City Marina Hotel last night.![]()
Recently, MSCI stated that it was considering reclassifying Indonesia from an Emerging Market to a Standalone Market.
Indonesia’s benchmark Jakarta Stock Exchange Composite Index (JKSE) fell by more than 5% during early trading, reaching its lowest level in six years following a sharp 11.6% decline the previous Friday.![]()
Meanwhile, the Indonesian rupiah also weakened following MSCI’s warning regarding the possibility of Indonesia being removed from its global indices next year.![]()
